Being Present for Learning

The healing power of poetry.

Education should nurture not only the mind, but also the heart and soul. Every student deserves a safe and supportive learning environment where it’s okay to step outside of one’s comfort zone, make mistakes and learn from them.

I invite you to join me on a journey of mindfulness, literacy, and excellence. Through my Write to the Core curriculum, I have taught students to be more focused, self-aware, and perhaps, most importantly, more compassionate with themselves and their peers. This innovative approach combines the core skills of reading and writing with those needed to live a harmonious life.

Write to the Core:
Inspiring Young Writers Through Mindfulness and Poetry

Write to the Core is a writing curriculum that integrates reading, writing, and mindfulness practices. It is designed for instructors who believe in the validity of students' emotional lives in the classroom. The curriculum helps students meet academic standards, build creative thinking skills and increase self-awareness while also increasing emotional regulation.

Student Works

Mindful literacy has empowered students to process feelings such as those of grief and shame through poetry. Their poems have been collected in several anthologies, including "Same Boat: Stories of Love, Loss, and Resilience".

“Learning how to express myself through writing instead of feeling it burdening me has been a gift.”

— Maddy, Skyline High School Student
