MY MISSION is to inspire schools to be more joyful, reflective, and healing-centered communities by integrating mindfulness and creative writing. By honoring our emotional lives, building the muscle of self-compassion and empathy, and promoting self-expression, we can create a more equitable, peaceful world.

Laura Bean Founder, Mindful Literacy

My work has been featured in UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Magazine and in the anthology Educating Mindfully: Stories of School Transformation Through Mindfulness. I am a member of the Coalition of Schools Educating Mindfully.

I currently lead a community of practice around lessons from Write to the Core with my colleagues in West Contra Costa Unified School District and have led professional development for the Tang Center at UC Berkeley, among others.

I’m Laura, a writing specialist and educational wellness consultant, and author of Write to the Core. I lived in Kyoto, Japan for ten years, where I taught English as a Second Language and creative writing to university students. Since returning to the U.S. in 2011, I’ve been working with English learners and other underserved students in public schools in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I earned an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Arizona and began teaching poetry to young people as a writer-in-residence for Teachers & Writers Collaborative in New York City. I’ve been practicing mindfulness for three decades, and am a certified Mindful School’s Mindful Educator.
